Homemade Stove Top Stuffing

Forget the box. Make your own holiday stuffing from scratch with our favorite recipe!
Cooking Tip

If you like a more wet, pudding-like consistency, you can add more broth. If you like it a little more dry, then don't add as much. Make it just how you like it!

Ingredients

  • 8 cups of day-old bread, cut into cubes and dried out
  • 1.5 sticks butter
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 1.5 cups celery, diced
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper, ground
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1.5 tsp dried sage
  • 2.5 cups chicken (or turkey) broth
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh rosemary, minced
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 pinch cayenne (optional)

Directions

  1. Add dried bread cubes to a large mixing bowl and set aside. Melt 1 stick of butter over medium heat in a medium sized sauté pan. Once the butter is liquid, add onion, celery and salt. Sauté until onions are soft, about 5 minutes, then add sage, thyme and broth to the pan.
  2. Once boiling, remove from heat and pour over bread cubes. Toss with a large wooden spoon and get everything evenly coated.
  3. Add parsley, egg, rosemary, black pepper and cayenne, if using, and mix to combine. Melt the remaining 1/2 stick of butter in the same pan we used earlier over medium heat and then add the stuffing mixture, patting down firmly with a spatula. Cook until a golden crust forms (about 5 minutes) and turn stuffing over in sections.
  4. Continue cooking and turning until the desired brown color has been reached, then serve.
