Increase your impact, decrease your tax burden
Give smarter, leave nothing on the table
If you’re in a position to give thoughtfully, there’s likely a path that costs you less and does more good. Let’s find yours.
Find the giving path that works for you
Beyond a check or credit card, these giving options are designed to reduce your tax burden while doing more good. The right path depends on your situation.
Stocks & Securities
Gifts of appreciated stock can increase your impact and reduce capital gains taxes.
Donor-Advised Funds
Already have a donor-advised fund (DAF)? Recommending a grant to Second Harvest takes just minutes.
Qualified Charitable Distributions
If you’re 70½ or older, you can give directly from your IRA to Second Harvest, tax-free. These qualified charitable distributions can also count toward your required minimum distribution.
Real Estate
Property you’ve been holding could provide the foundation of nutritious food for your neighbors for years to come. We’d love to talk through what that could look like.
Kay Porta Society
A community of neighbors who’ve made Second Harvest part of their legacy through wills, bequests, beneficiary designations and other planned gifts.
Kay believed food is a basic human need that connects us all. The society that carries her name is built on that same belief. When one of her daughters once asked how she kept doing such emotionally hard work, Kay’s answer was simple: “I just know the kids are better because I’m there.” She lived to see the food bank she started grow into the organization it is today. Near the end of her life, she said it herself: “I’m glad to know that after all these years, it’s still going.”
Not sure which path is right for you?
My stocks or mutual funds have grown in value
You may be able to avoid capital gains taxes and make a larger gift by donating appreciated securities directly.
I already work with a financial advisor or have a giving fund set up
Donor-advised funds make it easy to support Second Harvest while incorporating charitable giving into your broader financial plans.
I'm over 70½ and have an IRA I don't fully rely on
A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) lets you give directly from your IRA and may help reduce your taxable income.
I'm thinking about what I'll leave behind
A legacy gift through your will, trust or beneficiary designation can help feed our community for generations to come.
Your gift goes to work right here, right now
Second Harvest is based out of Spokane and the Tri-Cities serving a big corner of the region — Eastern Washington and North Idaho. Local farmers like Fred from Imperial’s Garden in Wapato bring us their surplus harvest. Yakama Nation Farms grows with intention and shares what they raise. Our mobile markets carry it directly into neighborhoods. During the school year, Bite2Go puts meals and snacks in kids’ backpacks before the weekend. A tax-smart gift funds the whole chain, from field to family, and keeps it moving all year long.
