Cooking Tip

We like to check our pie crust around the 10-minute mark to gauge whether we will need a full 15 minutes, or maybe 12 or 13 minutes will do just fine.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (can be a 50/50 mix with whole wheat flour)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 5 tbsp cold butter
  • 2-3 tbsp cold water

Directions

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add the butter and use a fork, pastry cutter or food processor to blend the flour mixture with the butter until it is the consistency of a wet sand.
  2. Add two tablespoons of water and mix together until the dough starts coming together. If the dough is still dry, you can add the additional tablespoon of water as needed. Using your hands, form two equal size balls of dough and set aside to rest for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. On a floured surface, take each of the dough balls and flatten them separately. Roll out until a circle forms that is about 6 inches across.
  4. Fill with about 1/4 cup of sweet or savory filling on one side, wet the edge of the dough and fold the unfilled side over before crimping shut with a fork or your fingers. Poke some vent holes in the top of your dough using a fork or knife.
  5. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes. The finished product should be light brown on top with a darker coloring around the edges.
