TOM’S TURKEY DRIVE WINS EMMY, STREET MUSIC WEEK & MORE

KREM 2 Emmy Recognition for Tom’s Turkey Drive

Earlier this month, KREM 2 received a regional Emmy Award for Tom’s Turkey Drive. This reward was presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Northwest Chapter and signifies outstanding community outreach.

Second Harvest has been a long-time partner for Tom’s Turkey Drive but the Thanksgiving meal distribution for 2020 was unlike any the community had seen before. In order to maintain a safe social distance, Second Harvest applied the “drive-thru” food pickup method to Tom’s Turkey Drive, completely overhauling traditional logistics. The reimagined annual event took place at the Spokane County Fairgrounds and provided nearly twice as many meals compared to 2019. The need for food assistance had been, and continues to be, unprecedented throughout the pandemic. Despite logistical obstacles, community partners came together to recreate an event to serve those in need in new and innovative ways.

Second Harvest is proud to partner annually with our friends at KREM 2 on this important community initiative. From all of us at Second Harvest, thank you to all the community partners, donors, and volunteers that came together in order to make this spectacular event possible. We are proud to celebrate this recognition with Tom’s Turkey Drive. Congratulations KREM on this well-deserved honor!

With economics the way they are today, Steve accesses Second Harvest Mobile Market free food distributions on base.

Naturally cheery, Steve manages a smile even when he explains “Times are hard.” Simultaneously, he proudly adds, “We have two kids, 13 and 14. They eat like crazy and are growing like mad.”
