SOME OF OUR FAVORITE LOCAL STORIES
Feed. Nourish. Build. – Jun 9
Feed. Nourish. Build. It’s Second Harvest’s work and your impact.
Our team spent time recently more clearly defining how our hunger-relief mission shows up in local neighborhoods because of support from people like you. We developed a new framework for us to talk about the important work we do every day and how the different areas of our work overlap.
The result? Feed. Nourish. Build. Three pillars of our vital work. All are connected, and each is important and contributes to the whole.
Kids Summer Cooking Classes – Jun 2
So many life skills are learned in the kitchen — counting, following directions, teamwork, science, budgeting both time and money, problem-solving, creativity, and more! This is why Second Harvest is passionate about providing kids with the opportunity to build confidence in the kitchen. We’re excited to host two great kids cooking camps this summer in The Kitchen at Second Harvest.
Agency Spotlight: Volunteers of America – May 26
Volunteers of America’s partnership with Second Harvest is an essential part of the services offered at their locations: Hope House, Hope House Apartments and The Marilee Apartments. While the Volunteers of America provide support through social services and case management, Second Harvest focuses on providing food that is distributed daily as meals and groceries to their clients.
Focus on Senior Nutrition – May 19
May is Older Americans Month so let’s chat nutrition for ages 60 and up. Just like our eating habits fluctuate throughout our lifetime, our dietary needs also change. Here are some tips and tricks to make your golden years healthy ones.
Bite2Go Volunteer Spotlight: John – May 12
The Bite2Go program is a collaboration of two Spokane nonprofits — Second Harvest and At The Core — and currently feeds nearly 10,000 kids from North Idaho to the east slope of the Cascades. The child hunger program matches up schools in need with adoptive organizations — churches, businesses and civic groups — that are able to fund the program.
Volunteers play a vital role when it comes time to transport Bite2Go kits from east central Spokane to some of the distant communities we serve; in some cases — Ellensburg, Chelan, George — the distance is well over 100 miles.
John Ammann is one of those volunteers who helps Bite2Go support kids across eastern and central Washington.
Community Partner Spotlight: Roy Lamb – May 5
Back in 1990, Roy Lamb, his dad and his brother built the first cooler and freezer in Second Harvest’s then brand-new warehouse. Today, Roy and the Lambco team are nearly finished with a major expansion of that cooler and freezer space – adding 3,025 square feet to our existing 13,000 square feet.

Reducing Food Waste from Farm to Table – April 21
Each person in Spokane County wastes an average of 170 pounds of food annually, according to a recent report. This not only raises an environmental concern, but an economic one. To serve more people facing hunger and reduce waste, Second Harvest’s Food Sourcing team works closely with farmers, producers and retailers to rescue nutritious food to share with neighbors in need.
