Community cooking class at The Kitchen: Powerful Plant Proteins – December 22

Today, Scott is participating in his fifth community cooking class at Second Harvest’s teaching kitchen. He’s a participant in Medically Tailored Meals, a 16-week study conducted by Spokane Teaching Health Clinic in partnership with Second Harvest’s nutrition education program.

The study seeks to determine whether and how providing cooking education and healthy food for free can improve diet-related quality of life for people who have Type 2 diabetes and a Medicaid-sponsored health insurance.

According to the Department of Agriculture, 30% to 40% of the U.S. food supply goes to waste, which amounts to an estimated total of 133 billion pounds of food and costs households an average of $1,500 per year. There must be a better way to keep our families nourished and happy without compromising our wallets, even if it means starting with fruit and produce.

You may be familiar with the hustle and bustle of Black Friday and Cyber Monday — those days when the focus often turns to shopping and bargains. However, there’s another day on the calendar that embodies the true spirit of the season, and one that we truly celebrate: Giving Tuesday. It just happened and is a day when people from all walks of life come together to give back. This year, it made a profound impact on our community, especially for people facing hunger.

We are grateful to Idaho Central Credit Union (ICCU) for their generosity. For the second year in a row, they extended support with an extraordinary $15,000 matching gift, inspiring people like you to pause the purchasing and press play on impact.

Turkey Drive Recap – November 24

As we reflect on this year’s turkey drives, we want to share our gratitude. A community of volunteers, food pantries, agriculture partners and donors joined hands to distribute 6,800 Thanksgiving meals to neighbors in need in Spokane, the Mid-Columbia and Yakima Valley. To each of you, we say thank you.

Service to Country and Community – November 10

The Bite2Go program rallies people from a diversity of backgrounds around the simple belief that no child should go hungry. Our donors and volunteers come from the business world, the faith community and a variety of civic groups and clubs; they range in age from 9 to 90.

As Nov. 11, Veterans Day, approaches, we’d like to take time to thank a special group — our veterans — and acknowledge the multiple ways they serve our program and our communities as they once served their nation.
