Hunger Action Month – September 1

Author: Chris Houglum

Did you know September is Hunger Action Month? It’s a time when we can all come together, nationally, regionally, and most importantly on a local level, to make a difference in our communities and help feed those who are in need. And guess what? Gesa Credit Union is all in as our sponsor to amplify your generosity.

Hunger is a real problem for many people across the country and right here in our communities. In fact, nearly 34 million Americans, including 9 million children, don’t have enough food to eat on a regular basis. Here in the Inland Northwest, that means 1 out of 10 people—including 1 out of 7 children—faces hunger.

When people are fed, futures are nourished. Everyone deserves to live a full life. Nutritious food creates fuel for progress. So how can you help feed, nourish and build a brighter future for our neighbors whose cupboards are bare? It’s actually pretty simple.

One easy way to help right now is to donate money or food to Second Harvest or your local food pantry. Every gift counts and collective action creates big impact! We’ll stretch your dollars as far as we can to source and share as much food as we can get our hands on. And thanks to our friends at Gesa Credit Union, the first $25,000 donated during Hunger Action Month will be matched.

Another way to get involved is to share your time in one of our volunteer centers, at a Mobile Market free food distribution, or with your local food pantry. Helping hands are needed at every step of the process to get nourishing food from field to plate efficiently. By giving just a few hours of your time, you can make a real impact on the lives of people who are struggling with hunger. We’ve recently expanded the number of volunteers we can accommodate to help activate more doers like you.

And of course, it’s important to spread the word and raise awareness about the challenges people face when food is scarce. Share posts on social media, talk to your friends and family about the issue and encourage others to get involved as well.

Remember, hunger is not just a problem during Hunger Action Month—it’s a year-round issue that requires ongoing attention and support. By taking action to address immediate needs, promote healthy eating habits, and support long-term solutions, we can make a real difference in the lives of people who are struggling with hunger. And with the support of partners like Gesa Credit Union matching the first $25,000 donated, we can build a stronger, more resilient community for everyone. Please join us in living out our shared values this Hunger Action Month.
