STORY OF HOPE

“There are so many things,” Renée said as she explained how COVID-19 has affected her and her husband’s financial situation. Being retired, living with no insurance and cooking for her mother twice a week has put a strain on Renée’s budget. This was her second time visiting a Mobile Market distribution.

The food Renée received at the last distribution allowed her to provide food for her family during the pandemic, despite rising food prices. “Everything has gone up,” Renée explained. “It’s been helping me to get better meals.”

In addition to providing meals to her mother, Renée also shared the food she received with her neighbors. “I have a lot of neighbors who have a lot of kids,” she said. “The extra stuff I get I share with them. You don’t want to waste anything.”

Renée was grateful to everyone who gave their time and money to make events like this possible. “This is wonderful. Your money is going to a very good cause. People have to eat.”

National Agriculture Month: Celebrating Ag Partners and Friends – March 1

Our ag partners range from small, local farms to large industry farms, livestock operations, and the processing and manufacturing plants that support them.

Nothing is more important than having food on the table. To state the obvious, food—like shelter—is something without which we cannot survive. Second Harvest thus quite literally provides a lifeline for those whom my wife and I cannot feed directly. And it has done so for the nearly 40 years that we have supported Second Harvest. During this period we have seen not even a hint that their mission is diminishing in importance. On the contrary, the organization seems to be throwing out more and more lifelines to those in our midst who are in danger of sinking.

Your guide to making tasty vegetable broth – February 16

Despite our best efforts to reduce food waste, it can sometimes be impossible to make it through a recipe without throwing away a carrot top or two. While it doesn’t feel like much at the time, you’d be surprised by how quickly the waste piles up. But fear not! You can easily transform those leftover vegetable scraps into delicious, homemade vegetable broth in just over an hour.
