Beef Bolognese Sauce

Your family will ask for seconds of this hearty beef Bolognese sauce that goes well with any of your favorite types of noodles!
Cooking Tip

Boiling your pasta will yield some starchy water that will be very useful in helping to thin out this pasta sauce as needed during the longer simmer time, just add a little of that starchy goodness at a time!

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup carrots, fine diced
  • 1/2 cup onion, fine diced
  • 1 cup brown mushrooms, fine diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a large heavy saucepan over medium-high, add the ground beef and brown well while breaking up the pieces. Transfer the cooked meat to a medium sized bowl.
  2. Turn the heat down to medium-low and add the last tbsp of oil, add the carrots and onion to the pan and cook about five minutes or so until the vegetables begin to soften. Add the mushrooms and cook another 3 minutes then add garlic and tomato paste and cook for about a minute or two.
  3. Return the cooked beef to the pan, add the canned tomatoes and seasonings to the pan. Taste and adjust the salt/pepper as needed. Bring the sauce to a simmer and partially cover the pan so the steam can escape.
  4. Cook the sauce for at least 30 minutes, an hour is preferred to allow the flavors to marry. Stir every 10 or so minutes and add a little water if the sauce ends up looking a little dry as it cooks.
  5. Remove the sauce from the heat source and top with grated parmesan cheese. Enjoy on top of any of your favorite noodle shapes.
