Getting good food where it’s needed most

Every day, perfectly good food gets rejected – maybe it’s a little irregular, nearing its “best-by” date, or just doesn’t look perfect on the shelf. We make sure it feeds people, not landfills.

Community food drives

Rally your crew. Nourish our community.

Food drives are a great way for schools, offices, community groups and places of worship to join Second Harvest in ending hunger.

  • Collect nonperishable food items, such as peanut butter, canned soup, cereal or other items. We can provide you with collection boxes.
  • Or we can turn your donated fundraiser dollars into meals

1 million tons of food goes to waste in Washington every year

The shocking truth: One-third is perfectly good food

  • It takes all of us – Our generous partners pick up the phone and call when they have a product that doesn’t meet the restaurant or retail standard. Every meal matters.
  • Stuck in transit – Food gets stranded on trucks and distribution centers across our service area. Zilch can keep the food moving.
  • Ready to rescue – Our team quickly recovers and redistributes stranded food throughout the community. Every rescued meal is an opportunity to make an impact.

No skinny pigs

“Those pigs aren’t getting any skinnier!” we joke with our farmer friend Lyle. Even food that can’t feed people finds a purpose – through local composters and animal feeders, we make sure nothing ends up in landfills.

Benefits of donating

There are many ways donating food can benefit you and/or your business

  • We know you may be worried about liability when it comes to donating food, but the U.S. Federal Government has passed major legislation to protect donors from criminal liability through the Good Samaritan Food Donation Act of 1996 and the Food Donation Improvement Act of 2022.
  • The PATH Act of 2015 provides enhanced tax deductions for businesses who donate food to charity.
  • Donating food can divert it from being dumped in landfills, which in turn helps businesses and the environment.
  • We will pick up donated product
"We know there's a need and it's growing. No one person, no one company will do it alone. It's everybody doing their part. We can provide a potato or an onion, but somebody else is going to provide a cherry or an apple."
