Paula arrived at the Mobile Market at West Central Community Center on a warm Wednesday afternoon in August. As a single mom, she was eager to feed her son and her nephew, both of whom live with her.
“Anything helps when you have two teenage boys,” she said.
Paula has used Second Harvest’s Mobile Markets before, as well as her local food bank. She works two jobs—one as a full-time in-home caregiver, as well as another part-time job. Because she works so much, she does not qualify for government assistance.
But, even with two jobs, Paula often still struggles financially, especially when it comes to affording food. “I just went to the store and I barely got anything, and it was $60,” she said. The Mobile Market helps fill nutrition gaps for her two boys. That day, she left with beef, apples, potatoes, onions, asparagus, bread and several other items.
Paula particularly appreciates the many fruits and vegetables provided by Second Harvest’s Mobile Markets. “I love the fresh produce. I eat a lot of salads. Whatever I don’t grow in my garden, I get here.”
Many families like Paula's struggle to afford fresh, healthy food. You can help provide healthy food to every person, every day by supporting Second Harvest.
