It’s hard to comprehend that hunger exists in our communities, that so many people don’t have enough nutritious food to sustain themselves or their families. But hunger is real. It looks like 55,000 people a week lined up at food bank, pantry or a Mobile Market served by Second Harvest to receive food at no cost.
It looks like Donna.
“I am a professional and never thought I’d be in the position of needing a food bank…until something unexpected brought our family to a place where we have almost no income until I’m able to return to work following surgery. It was with great humility that I entered the nearby church to accept “charity” for the first time. I was treated with kindness and respect.”
Many people in the Spokane area like Donna have jobs or own homes. But one medical emergency, a layoff, a job change, or divorce, can force them to seek food assistance. One in seven people, including one in five children in Spokane County are food insecure which puts their health at risk.
September is national Hunger Action Month, a time to take action and create awareness so no child, adult or senior has to experience chronic hunger. This Feeding America nationwide campaign, now in its tenth year, asks people to consider how it must feel to live with an empty stomach and then, to consider what they can do to help solve hunger.
Whether it’s a story, a tweet or a Facebook post, we encourage you to challenge viewers, listeners and readers to get involved in a hunger solution. We are using an empty plate to drive home the message. Help us inspire others to share their experiences on what they can’t do on an empty stomach to illustrate how people can’t meet their full potential without proper nutrition. We are asking you to share what you can do to help work toward a hunger solution that will provide healthy food for every person, every day.
