GROCERY RESCUE REDUCES WASTE, FIGHTS HUNGER- JULY 22

Author: Patty Kieburtz

Grocery Rescue, a partnership with local grocery stores and food retailers, is an integral part of Second Harvest’s mission to get food to every corner of its 26-county service area. The program’s goal is to partner with local establishments to reduce the waste of nutritious, salvageable food, and increase Second Harvest’s food supply for neighbors experiencing food insecurity. For over 12 years, Grocery Rescue has salvaged millions of pounds of safe, healthy food. Nearly a third of Second Harvest’s donated food intake is from partner grocery stores and retailers who have collaborated with the program to help feed neighbors facing hunger.

Mike Thomsen, supply chain director of food resources, oversees the Grocery Rescue program and its impact. He explained the significance of the program to Second Harvest’s partner agencies and clients.

“It provides local food banks with an amazing variety of produce, baked goods and protein that are not regularly available through traditional food sourcing efforts,” he said. “In return, local agencies ensure that these donations are quickly offered to those in need so that nothing is wasted.”

Over the past year, more than 12 million pounds of food were rescued from partner grocery stores and retailers and redistributed to our neighbors facing food insecurity.
