Meet Peggy

This week, we had the chance to interview one of our volunteers, Peggy. Peggy is a retired teacher and was looking for a way to get involved in her community while enjoying her retirement. She was kind enough to answer a few questions for us this week.

Peggy has been volunteering with Second Harvest for about two years now. You can find her at some of the morning shifts putting together Bite2Go kits for kids who need some food assistance over the weekend.

When the pandemic hit, Peggy wanted a way to help her community and get out of the house. After hearing about us online, she took to our website and found our volunteer sign-up portal. She told us, “It’s so easy to sign up. You login, pick a date and time that work for you, and you are in and out in two hours. The people I volunteer with are really nice.  It makes me feel really good and proud at the end of the day. I’m thankful to be helping during the pandemic— it feels good to help”.

Peggy actually heard about Bite2Go from one of the students in her classroom. She overheard an announcement on the intercom at school asking a group of students to come to the office. She noticed that the students who left came back with a bag. Later that day, she discreetly asked a student what the bag was for. The child smiled answered, “We get food for the weekend”. After seeing the program in action, Peggy took action to help the cause knowing she could help the students in her classroom by volunteering her time at Second Harvest. She shared, “I could tell how excited they were to get those bags”.

We gave Peggy an open mic at the end of her interview, and she told us, “This is a perfect opportunity to help the community and socialize in a safer setting”.
