MEET OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS – AUGUST 6

We have some exciting news to share with you for this week’s blog! Katie Burton, Controller at Lydig Construction and Nicole Sherman, Chief Operating Officer at Numerica Credit Union have both raised their hands to join our fight against local hunger.
Katie Burton
Katie has been on the Lydig team for 3 years now in a CPA/Controller position. She says, “I am inspired everyday by the individuals who collaborate and problem-solve to make our company better – from our administrative team to business development to project management. Plus we build really cool stuff! Personally, I love connecting with family/friends, traveling, old school rap, and basketball. I love coaching and watching my two kids participate in sports.”
She has served a number of charitable organizations including:
- Second Harvest – where she was involved in our Bite2Go Big Build and delivered backpack meals to adoptive schools.
- YMCA – as a youth basketball coach.
- Union Gospel Mission – Volunteer
- YMCA Corporate Board and Finance Committee
- YMCA Facilities Committee – Chair
- Leadership Spokane Class (2021)
Katie grew up on a farm in a small town in the lower panhandle of Idaho. Her parents were (& continue) to be very active in the community. They taught her the importance of service in one’s community— that making a difference at a national/global scale may be difficult, but you can be a positive influence and be active within your community and you can make a difference and improve the lives of those within the community, which can change the world. While she lives in a bigger community now, Katie doesn’t think it feels much different. The longer she is in Spokane, the more “small-town” it feels. And she loves it. Katie says, “Second Harvest has always been an organization that has held a special place in my heart. Something about the basic human need element tugs as my heart strings. No one should go hungry.” She is excited to serve Second Harvest in a greater capacity. Katie commends Second Harvest on the wonderful things accomplished for the community and looks forward to helping the organization carry out its mission.

Nicole Sherman
Nicole joins us with over 25 years of executive and senior leadership experience in the financial industry. She currently serves as Chief Operating Officer at Numerica Credit Union and comes from a career in banking including Columbia Bank, AmericanWest Bank and Zions Bank. Nicole is also a top-rated faculty member at University of Washington, Foster School of Business, Pacific Coast Banking School (PCBS) since 2003.
Nicole will be bringing her extensive volunteer experience with her as well…

Nicole returned to Spokane in November 2020. Service is at the core of everything she does, and she would like to continue serving on boards and in organizations that are fiercely focused on the issues of homelessness, food insecurities and generational poverty within our community. She loves her family and her snowmobile. When she is not playing winter warrior atop a motorized sled, she’s likely hiking and enjoying the Inland Northwest. Her motto is work hard, play hard— and positively impact as many lives as possible along the way.

We are absolutely thrilled to have both of these female leaders serving on our Board of Directors. We want to extend the warmest of welcomes for two special individuals who are willing to lend us their gifts and talents in order to help us carry out our mission of getting food to those who need it.

National Agriculture Month: Celebrating Ag Partners and Friends – March 1
We take immense pleasure throughout the year in celebrating our agriculture partners and friends. But during National Agriculture Month, we take extra measures to recognize their continued support, contributions and commitment to Second Harvest’s mission of serving people facing hunger.
Our ag partners range from small, local farms to large industry farms, livestock operations, and the processing and manufacturing plants that support them.
Why I support Second Harvest: A donor’s story – February 23
Nothing is more important than having food on the table. To state the obvious, food—like shelter—is something without which we cannot survive. Second Harvest thus quite literally provides a lifeline for those whom my wife and I cannot feed directly. And it has done so for the nearly 40 years that we have supported Second Harvest. During this period we have seen not even a hint that their mission is diminishing in importance. On the contrary, the organization seems to be throwing out more and more lifelines to those in our midst who are in danger of sinking.
