THANKSGIVING TURKEY DRIVES AND KSPS SPOKANE COUNTY SPOTLIGHT – NOVEMBER 20

THANKGIVING TURKEY DRIVES

Thanksgiving is almost here, and that means our Thanksgiving meal box distributions are coming right up! Thank you to everyone who has donated to help ensure everyone in our community has a Thanksgiving meal. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Second Harvest has made several changes to these events this year to comply with CDC health and safety recommendations. Please note the following:

Spokane’s Tom’s Turkey Drive:

The location for this year’s Tom’s Turkey Tuesday holiday meal box distribution (Nov. 24) has been changed to Spokane County Fairgrounds to accommodate a drive-thru style event.

Spokane Transit Authority riders will be able to pick up turkey meal boxes at Second Harvest (1234 E. Front Ave.) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., or while supplies last. This distribution location will be accessible only to transit riders and walkers.

For more information, please see the flyer posted below or click here.

Second Harvest is unable to host the traditional two-day drive in- person at local Rosauers stores. However, the stores themselves are making it easy for their customers to donate by purchasing complete Thanksgiving meals for $20, which will go to a family in need. You can also help by donating here.

Mid-Columbia and Yakima Valley Turkey Drive:

Second Harvest’s Mid-Columbia and Yakima Valley Thanksgiving meal distribution days and locations have been changed from years past. Distributions will take place on Monday, Nov. 23, at Sunnyview Park in Sunnyside and Yakima Valley College in Yakima, and on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at the Toyota Center in Kennewick. Click here for more details about these events.

Second Harvest partnered with Ben Franklin Transit Center to provide Thanksgiving meal boxes to people without access to a personal vehicle. Learn more about this partnership here.

Second Harvest is counting on our generous community to help provide Thanksgiving meal supplies to 2,200 families. To donate to the fifth annual Mid-Columbia and Yakima Valley Turkey Drive, click here.

Gonzaga’s Dusty Stromer and Zilch: Teaming up to end hunger – March 29

Dusty Stromer understood from a young age that while his family had enough to eat, others in his circle were not so fortunate. Dusty had a courtside seat to food insecurity — he says that by age 10, he knew some of his friends came from households where food was not reliably available.

A freshman shooting guard on the men’s basketball team at Gonzaga University, Dusty recently got a close look at the fight against hunger by touring Second Harvest’s warehouse and helping to distribute free food through its Zilch program.

Grocery Rescue: Changing lives daily – March 22

Your visit to a local grocery store may seem like a routine, unimportant chore. That perfect strawberry, tomato or apple you select is made possible because different departments of your neighborhood store carefully maintain a standard for each product. But what happens when the banana is too green, or the strawberries are too ripe? That product is stranded and without rescue would find its way to the landfill. Thanks to stores partnering with Second Harvest’s Grocery Rescue program, that nutritious food is shared with partner agencies throughout the 26 counties in Eastern Washington and North Idaho served by Second Harvest.
