Kelly and Greg's Story
Kelley and Greg know that life can change in an instant.
The couple lost their home in Hauser Lake, Idaho to an electrical fire early this spring. Within a few weeks, they got reestablished in a lease-to-own home in Post Falls. Kelley, who worked with her husband at a cell phone store, quit her job to shuttle their elementary-age children back and forth so they could finish the year at their school.
Three weeks later, things were starting to return to normal when Greg was assaulted by a drunk driver after a traffic incident. Greg suffered broken teeth and a head injury, which have resulted in debilitating headaches and missed work.
"Just when I thought things were getting better this happened," the 52-year-old dad said.
"It has been horrible," Kelley added. "We're not sure how we're going to pay next month's rent now."
The family had never sought food assistance before, but went to the Rathdrum Food Bank, one of Second Harvest's hunger-relief partners, for help. In addition to getting emergency food assistance, the couple learned about a Mobile Food Bank distribution held at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Rathdrum. The event provided food that helped about 140 struggling households and was held in partnership with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, a faith-based membership organization.
At the distribution, the family received fresh onions, lettuce, apples, cauliflower, bread and other healthy food that will help them get by as they work through these difficult times.
Kelley is grateful for the food her family received and is looking forward to better days.
"I just think it's absolutely wonderful. Nobody should go without food and this is a godsend."
